Sitting on the tarmac at Dulles. The last few hours (days, weeks) were completely mad. There was so much more I wanted to do before leaving – sort my digi photos both to bring with me and to burn for friends; learn a bit of Spanish; JailBreak (crack) iPhone to ensure I’ll be able to admin it down there. And on and on.
When the time came to leave, Eddie practically had to pry the computer from my hands. No surprise there. It will be interesting to see how computer deprivation affects this geek. I’m sure it will be healthy and freeing, blah blah.
But at the moment I’m struck with a bit of trepedation at not having access to all my files, photos, and documents for the next year. [At the last minute, i did chuck the most important things onto my server.]
Speaking of shedding -
I took the book’s advice to remove all my jewelry. Interesting that I felt a pang there. Similar to cutting my long hair years ago, my piercings and rings have defined me to a large extent. But it’s good to move beyond all that. Shedding my identity in order to pass isn’t necessarily a bad thing if I’m doing it on my terms and still have the attitude inside.
In lighter news, my pack is well within the target range of 1/4 to 1/5 of my body weight. It came in at 32.5 lbs, and everything fit perfectly. It’s really exciting to whittle everything I need to live down to a handful of stuff sacks.
As hellish as it was, moving out of the apartment was incredibly cathartic. I heartily recommend it. Getting rid of all that stuff that I took comfort in being surrounded by but that ultimately weighed me down on so many levels.
