These were just sitting around from a previous culture, so the Spanish used them to ferment their wine in until they switched to oak barrels.
The Incas called these containers “piscos”, which actually means “bird” in Quechua, so I don’t know why they called these strange-looking things that word since they obviously look nothing like birds. But that’s how the liquor got it’s name.
